I had an enjoyable and educational internship at Deerwalk Services. My four weeks here have been a truly enriching learning experience and below, I will briefly describe my internship experience.
The third season of Deertalk 2013, from May 23 to June 14, featured Ashish Vaidya, Deependra Shrestha, Deepak Karna, Jeevan Timilsina, Naresh Maharjan, Nimesh Deuja, Rachana Shrestha, Rajan Twati, Sawan Vaidya and Sunil Ghimire.
On Saturday, June 15, 2013, twenty-six Deerwalkers hopped in the vans and headed to Kakani for a management workshop. Our arrival brought with it a stroke of luck: the rain had lifted and we were able to begin the day’s program outside with some team and trust building exercises. Deertalk’s second season wrapped up on May 17, 2013. The season’s participants were Awanish Ranjan, Ashish Shrestha, Bhoj Raj Ghimire, Bikram Lal Shrestha, Lava Kafle, Milan Lamichhane, Sachin Karanjit, Samrat Karanjit, Sanket Shrestha, Sweta Karna and Suresh Maharjan.
Throughout my career I have been a part of different IT offshore businesses at different levels and I have found the field to be very challenging. Challenging because of the immaturity of the IT field, geographical separation and cultural differences rather than the novelty of the model itself.
Deerwalk Genomics team has been working on human genome variation science and primarily works on extraction (i.e. curation) of gene variations (mutations) and their overall information from biomedical literature, interpretation of mutations' significance, and integration of them into the database. Deerwalk was established with a handful of employees in 2009 and it currently has more than 150 employees in its Kathmandu office. For the benefit of staff, a subsidized canteen was started in October 2011.
